I developed this course as I observed my patients and people working out in the gym. I began to notice patterns of tightness in their bodies and the general lack of core engagement, despite stretching and doing “core exercises.” It is this combination of patterns that sets people up for pain and vulnerability to injury.
Our bodies get tight from old injuries and a sitting culture. Our true core stability becomes inhibited from pain, injuries, or suboptimal posture.
I would teach these concepts to my patients in the clinic, but teaching one or two components once or twice was just not getting the results I wanted for them. They needed a more comprehensive approach— one that broke down the work into components with guided practice over time so they could master and “own” the skills.
That’s why I developed Power of Core—a step-by-step program that not only improves the mobility of your entire body but helps your core fire more efficiently in everything you do!
The Missing Link:
Most people think core stability is just about doing crunches, planks, or leg lifts. But true core stability is more than that—it’s about your body automatically engaging the right muscles in response to any movement. Your core should fire in anticipation of movement, ensuring that your joints are stable before you even begin an activity.
This is the missing link in most training programs, even for athletes! If your body isn’t aligned, if your muscles aren’t firing properly, and if there are restrictions in your movement, you’ll be more prone to pain and injury—no matter how much you stretch or strengthen.
In Power of Core, I’ll teach you how to restore the optimal length and mobility of your muscles and fascia, while reactivating your deep core stability. This course gives you the tools to achieve lasting strength, mobility, and freedom from pain.
MY JOURNEY
Back Pain
I’ve been a Physical Therapist for over 25 years, primarily helping people with pain—back pain, knee pain, neck pain, you name it, and recover from injuries. While my work has evolved into include more complex health concerns such as GI issues, neurodegenerative disease, autoimmune and many other complicated cases, there are still Foundational components of Structural Health that need to be addressed in EVERY BODY.
A Mechanically Healthy Body
I’ve struggled with pain since I was 16. It began with back pain, which continued until my early 40s, and then evolved into knee pain, plantar fasciitis, upper back and shoulder pain, and neck pain. Over the years, I tried everything—medications, ultrasound, injections, orthotics, massage, and endless exercises. But the pain still interfered with my life, affecting my ability to run, play tennis, compete in triathlons, and even do simple everyday things like sitting and driving.
When I began to seriously pursue triathlon, I pushed my body hard. I still dealt with knee, back, neck, and foot pain, but I managed to power through. I was working on my core, but I kept being told my core was weak—and that just didn’t make sense to me. I was doing all the "core" work: planks, crunches, stretches I learned in PT school, and even Pilates.
It wasn’t until my late 30s, when I started receiving high-quality manual mechanical treatment while pursuing my Fellowship in Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy, that I began to find relief. This work helped release the lifelong strains on my body from injuries, and I started to understand how my body functioned as a whole. I learned to optimize how my body moved in every activity.
Here’s what I discovered:
Now, when I stay on top of my Foundational Skills (what I now call The Power of Core), I am more aligned and functionally stronger. If I slack off because I’m busy or feeling good, I can immediately notice the difference. Pain starts to creep back into my low back, upper back, and right knee. I can even feel a bunion trying to form!
This work has kept me pain-free, structurally healthy, and strong. It allows me to work out, play tennis, ski, paddleboard, and treat my patients with strength, ease, and fewer injuries.

Jen Shepherd, a Physical Therapist, unknowingly began her health journey at a young age, facing challenges, back pain, painful periods, knee pain, and GI issues. Driven by her own struggles and unsatisfactory experiences with medical practitioners, she pursued a career in Physical Therapy, determined to offer better care to others.
However, as her own health and patient outcomes stagnated despite exercises, stretches, and joint mobilizations, Jen’s curiosity led her to seek deeper answers. She found mentors who taught her to view the body as an interconnected system of organs and systems working in harmony. Through this holistic approach, she learned how to address the root causes of health issues by identifying and restoring old injuries which in turn affected the entire body. She works with patients who have not had success with doctors who only recommend rest, imaging, medications or surgery and other practitioners who only chase the symptoms and treat only the body part that hurts.
Jen has studied and practiced to optimize her understanding and skillset of how the human body works. She is a Fellow with the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapists, Fellowship Trained and Certified Functional Manual Therapist, a Certified Practitioner of Functional Medicine with the Institute for Functional Medicine, Advanced Practitioner of Visceral, Vascular and Neural Manipulation, and a Graduate of the Integrated Systems Model. She takes great care of her body as she worked it hard in her youth as a D1 tennis player, mountain biker, skiier, and Ironman triathlete. She continues to stay painfree and active by working her Foundations in The Power of Core, which allows her to continue to workout, walk, run, ski, and play tennis with strength and fewer injuries.
Today, Jen helps people across the country who have struggled to find answers from specialists. Through her Integrative Manual Physical Therapy approach, she empowers them with the skills and tools needed to restore their health and thrive for a lifetime.
